CHAPTER 15

Within ten minutes, Anna, Heather, and Olivia were on their way to the public library, where Olivia hoped they might find Caroline.

They searched every square inch of both floors, but there was no sign of her. Next, they went to her favorite coffee shop, then to another friend’s house, but nobody had heard from her all day.

“Now I’m really getting worried,” Olivia said as they walked back to the car. “I can’t think of anywhere else she might go. We tell each other everything. Why wouldn’t she tell me where she is?”

Olivia’s cellphone rang. “It’s Mr. Gannon.” She answered the call and told him that she was with Anna and Heather, and they were still looking for Caroline. Anna could hear the concern in Bill’s voice through Olivia’s phone. After they hung up, Olivia relayed to them that Bill was on his way to the police to ask for help finding his daughter.

“I hate those girls who were talking about Mr. Gannon,” Olivia said. “Why can’t they just mind their own business? Caroline has been through enough already, with the illness and passing of her mother.”

“I’m sure the police will find her,” Anna said. “They are the pros. Detective Doyle will make it a priority.”

“I hope so,” Olivia said. “I’ve sent Caroline five text messages today, and she hasn’t replied. She’s never ghosted me like that.”

Anna dropped Olivia off at her house, and she and Heather went to Bella’s Dream. When they arrived, Velma informed Anna that Bill Gannon had called. He left his phone number and asked Anna to call him back.

Anna and Heather went into her office for privacy, and she placed the call.

“Thanks for getting back to me,” Bill said. “I realize how badly it must look that I lied to you about my alibi, but I was hoping we could talk. I understand if you’d like to meet me in a public place, but I promise you, I’ve never hurt anyone in my whole life, and I never would.”

“I’m at Bella’s Dream now. Would you like to come here?”

“I’ll be right over.”

Ten minutes later, Bill entered the ice cream shop with heavy steps. Anna and Heather led him over to a booth in the dining area.

“Thank you for agreeing to meet with me. I know how bad this all must look. I thought my brother would cover for me, and he would have, if he had been in town. But when the police learned he was away on business, my alibi fell through. But that’s the least of my problems right now. I’m worried sick about my daughter’s safety. She’s all I have left.”

Anna’s heart went out to the man because of his daughter, but she still wasn’t sure if she should trust him. “If you’re not guilty, why did you lie?”

“The only reason I did it was to make things easier on Caroline. I knew I would be a suspect in Beverly’s murder because of our argument in the parking lot. Everyone knew how angry I was at her for accusing my daughter of cheating.
